SARAH E. GOODE

AFTER THE CIVIL WAR SARAH E. GOODE GAIN HER FREEDOM MOVED TO CHICAGO AND OPENED A MODEST FURNITURE STORE. DEALING WITH THE DIFFICULITIES OF NOT HAVING A ENOUGH SPACE SHE WORKED ON A IDEA OF COMBINING A FULL SIZE MATTRESS WITH THE FUNCTIONS OF A CABINET, DESK & SHELF. IN JULY 1885 SARAH E. GOODE WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN TO APPLY FOR A PATENT AND AWARDED FROM THE UNITED STATES PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE.

  1. Do you have any pictures of Ms. Goode? I ask because she was included in this month's JET Magazine, but they mistakenly put in a photo of the wrong person by her name. (The photo jet has is from the national portrait gallery and is of a famous black sculptor.
